The Travails of the Business Jet Industry
Here comes a Fightback: two groups involved in US business aviation have now launched a campaign to improve the industry’s image. The campaign is called “No plane. No gain” and even has its own web site.
As it happens, I have some sympathy for the industry. There is actually some point to executives of big companies with plants or facilities spread across the US, and indeed around the world, flying point-to-point by corporate jet to visit them.
As a shareholder, I would prefer senior executives to save time in this way rather than having to queue at airports to get through security check points.
There has no doubt been excess in recent years, with executives using “security” as an excuse to travel everywhere by Private Jets. Executives being allowed to use the company jet to go on holiday also strikes me as dubious practice.
But I do not grasp what benefit it brings to investors (even when the government has a stake) to insist on all Corporate Jet Flights being sold off.

Drive Tesla Roadster; Forget What You Knew About Acceleration
Not because the electric vehicle’s interior, despite an inspired upgrade, smacks of an aftermarket refit. Or that its $128,000-plus price tag is an affront to the segment.
Disillusionment festers because every other vehicle now on the market, and most of those to come, will be shackled by the vagaries of internal combustion.
Harnessing electron flow affords pull so intense, it seems unnatural. So to those auto makers that would still claim prodigious pickup from a gas pedal: You need to shut up.
Acceleration no longer is measured in degrees of delay. And the benchmark is the Roadster Sport.
With a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) rating of 3.7 seconds, the car’s 288-hp electric motor delivers maximum torque on demand. All 280 lb.-ft. (380 Nm). No waiting.
Cruising around an on-ramp at 60 mph, we spy an orange Carrera. We catch up and show the Tesla’s LED taillights to the Porsche, almost instantly upping the ante to 80-plus mph (128 km/h) with the flick of a foot.
Now we know how Han Solo felt when the Millennium Falcon kicked in to hyper-drive, minus Chewbacca’s histrionics.
Because there is no growl. No roar. No exhaust system, period. Tesla’s top-line 2-seater surges with a whirr. Like a carnival bumper car, only more refined.
The dearth of rich, visceral sound from such an athletic ride is, at first, disconcerting. But the performance benefit of electric drive makes this sacrifice worthwhile.
The tranquility also accommodates comfortable cabin conversation, which comes easily anyway, even with the top down.
Equally remarkable is the car’s deceleration. Releasing the accelerator triggers the motor’s dynamo function, which not only generates energy but actively slows the vehicle as if you were gearing down.
Of course, with the car’s single-speed gearbox, there is no shifting of any description.
The Roadster Sport adds new dimensions to input modulation. Control is enhanced and brake-wear is an afterthought.
Other maintenance bonuses: Oil changes are moot, along with emissions checks. The only red flag in the owner’s manual is a recommendation to change, at five to seven years, the antifreeze serving the battery pack’s cooling system.
On a twisting hill descent down a narrow back road, we tap the 4-wheel discs twice, relying almost solely on the motor’s extraordinary push-pull to negotiate curves. And when we reach bottom, we’ve actually added 2 miles (3.2 km) of range.
The 6,831 lithium-ion cells in the Roadster Sport’s battery pack promise 244 miles (393 km) of driving on a single charge.
Expect a drained battery to recharge in about 10 hours on the 240-volt, 30-amp circuits found in most homes. So range anxiety becomes a non-factor for the average commuter who tops up at the end of every work day.
But because a nationwide infrastructure of high-powered public charge outlets appears years away, and one hour of charging on a standard 120-volt, 12-amp circuit equates to just four miles (6.4 km) of travel, road trips in a Tesla portend some genuine adventure.
Note: Mobile connectors are optional equipment – $1,500 for 240-volt; $600 for 120-volt. But the light show that accompanies the charging process provides some amusement. Pulsating LEDs in the charge port glow blue, yellow and green to indicate progress.
Absent any range concerns, the Roadster Sport assures memorable driving experiences. While the Mini Cooper long has evoked go-kart comparisons, the Roadster Sport comes much closer – if only because of its manual steering.
The Tesla’s steering setup offers a light workout in city driving. But at highway speeds, particularly with the exceptional level of available boost, a tight tiller is welcome.
Tesla also offers a custom-tuned suspension to Roadster Sport buyers. This is an appealing feature given the car’s stiffness, an attribute engineered by Britain-based Lotus Cars, whose Elise 2-seater inspires Tesla’s Roadster line.
A Tesla executive bristles at the prevailing notion that its cars are modified versions of the Elise. Though they share just 6% parts commonality, the family resemblance remains strong.
To accommodate its battery pack and power electronics module, the Roadster Sport has a longer wheelbase and wider track than the Elise. However, while its profile evokes the Fiat X1/9, the Roadster Sport’s shape is all Elise – a letdown, considering the Tesla is twice the price.
The carbon-fiber Roadster Sport comes with a fabric top. It rolls up to fit easily in the trunk, which conveniently is about the same size as a golf bag. But be wary of the optional removable hardtop. The trim, sculpted Tesla wears this lid like a bad toupee.
Inside, carbon fiber accents are constant reminders that the Roadster Sport is high-tech. So why does this 6-figure car’s interior look like it was done by a backyard customizer?
The Roadster Sport inherits from Lotus a cramped footwell and glaring deficiencies in fit and finish.
Tesla imports from U.K.-based Lotus a built-up “glider,” which comprises the car’s interior and key chassis components, then completes the Roadster Sport’s assembly here by installing its patented electric-drive system.
The leather upholstery on our tester’s door is puckered and wrinkled, while instrument-panel control knobs (one of which falls off) retain a disconcerting industrial-grade feel.
More pleasing are the haptics emanating from the driver-information screen, which delivers data ranging from tire pressure to the number of barrels of oil saved while driving the Tesla.
The modestly proportioned display responds to every touch with a decisive pat, but the accompanying beeps are loud and annoyingly sharp.
This interface also is used to calibrate the car’s energy use. Four modes – storage, standard, range and performance – juggle charge conservation accordingly.
The latter setting enables snappier response by warming the battery. However, it also compromises battery life if used excessively.
The new-for-’10 glovebox is appropriately named, because that’s about all it will hold.
Gone from the outgoing model is the fake tachometer, which simply mimicked the speedometer needle’s movement. In its place is a useful gauge that tracks kilowatts-per-hour generated and expended.
Similarly, the previous model’s faux shifter, which afforded all the charm of a kit-car interior, has been replaced by a tastefully trimmed console adorned with buttons: ‘P’ for park, ‘N’ for neutral, ‘R’ for reverse and ‘D’ for drive.

Honda Accord Euro is Wheels Car of the Year 2008
The Honda Accord Euro won this award which is recognized as one of the most prestigious global awards in motoring industry. The Japanese car outclassed an array of 35 other new cars introduced in 2008. Eight expert judges from Wheels magazine tested 18 new car models over a period of 7 days, covering over 10,000 Kms. The selection criteria was based on five key areas; technology, function, environmental safety, value, and efficiency.
This is the fifth time Honda, has won the Wheels Car of the Year Award - first time it was the original Honda Accord in 1977, which also happened to be the first car from Japan to win this prestigious award. Other Honda models which have won this award include Honda Odyssey in 1995, the Honda NSX in 1991, and the Honda Prelude in 1987. Now, after 14 years, the Honda Accord Euro has triumphed, winning the 46th annual award of the world longest continuously running Car of the Year Award.

Why Is a Private Pilot Commonly Called an Amateur Pilot?
Be it for tv ratings, newspaper circulation, magazine sales, etc the watchful eye of the media has always been quick to carefully detail airplane crashes and near misses between small planes.
The Private Charter Flight is always being scrutinized in the media and in many cases being referred to as an amateur pilot. The word amateur is defined in numerous ways. It can be defined as a person attached to a particular pursuit or study without formal training or pay.
Another definition is someone who pursues a study or sport as an informal pastime or hobby. The definitions are similar and broad. The problem is that the term amateur pilot paints the picture of an individual who reads a magazine on flying airplanes, and then hops into the nearest cockpit and flies away. Acquiring a private pilot certificate and the legal means to fly an airplane indeed requires formal training as well as certain medical requirements as well as successful completion of numerous tests.
So where does the word amateur come into the picture? In comparison, a private pilot flying for hobby and fun does in fact need substantially less training then a commercial pilot flying cargo or human beings across the sky professionally.
Flying for sport or hobby requires a Private Pilot Certificate in the USA. There are also certificates available that require less training such as the Sport Pilot certificate. This certification carries with it certain stipulations due to the fact that it requires less training and is less costly to the student.
The private certificate however provides the pilot with the ability to fly in controlled airspace which can be critical depending on where he or she lives or flies. Another difference between these two certificates is the need for a medical exam by a certified medical examiner specifically qualified and approved by the FAA. A Sport pilot certificate does not require the student to pass an aviation medical exam.
Future pilots must be able to understand, speak, and read the English language. Aircraft control towers and airports, use the English language for communication. This is actually true in most airports around the world, even where English is not the native language. Choosing a flight school is very important. Information is always available at your local general aviation airports. Training does not come cheap. A private pilot certificate requires forty hours minimum of actual flying time.
This includes the time in the airplane with an instructor as well as time spent flying solo. Many flight schools recommend students seek a medical certificate from your local FAA certified physician prior to starting any training. The medical exam is a general physical meant to encompass the senses required for flying a plane as well as a general check of the heart and its health.
Once the student has passed that, your flight school or private flight instructor will begin the process of both ground training as well as in-flight training. Ground school varies tremendously among students based on amount of time spent per week along with the rate of material absorption. Student pilots can acquire information through a variety of methods including the internet, training videos, and good old fashion books and manuals. At some point in your training beyond basic ground school, student pilots have to take a multiple choice written test, nowadays typically from a computer terminal, with software provided by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Upon passing the written FAA test, as it is referred to, you need to log in-flight training hours beyond the minimums required by the FAA. For a private certificate, students need to log solo time, night flying time, and demonstrate the ability to successfully compete cross-country flights which are flights from one airport to another.
A check-ride, or final test, is then required with your local FAA designated examiner. The checkride (or final exam) includes an oral test accompanied by a practical test where the student must demonstrate a variety of specific maneuvers and familiarity with the airplane. This is the point where the word amateur becomes skewed. With all the requirements met and tests passed, the student will be issued a private pilot certificate. Although a pilot's experience is measured over time in flying hours and new pilots certainly lack air time when compared to a pilot who has been flying for years or even decades, it still seems a bit harsh to label a private pilot as an amateur pilot.

Fly With Style With Private Jet Charter Services
There are a number of Private Jet Services that are already making their way out in the market for ordinary people like you. This is the best and the most modern way to travel. If you are looking for utmost comfort and total convenience, then there is no better option than riding Charter a Private Airplane.
What makes a ride in a private jet better than commercial flights? For one, you don't have to wait in long lines any longer. You dictate your time, so there would be no such thing as delayed flights. You do not have to be constrained by commercial air flight's schedule. What's even worse is sometimes your airline can cancel your flight for whatever reason, but with a private jet, you can actually forget all these kind of delays.
You can eat gourmet meals specially made for you, not those mass-produced food you find in normal flights. There is even a bar that you can get a drink or two. You can also enjoy a good film with their in-flight movies.
Ultimately, a private jet charter can give you total comfort. You don't have to make your way through a crowd or strain your legs because you can barely move in your seat. The aircraft is spacious enough for you to roam around with ease. The customer service in private flights is totally top-class. They always ensure that you are comfortable and have everything you need right in front of you.
If boarding in a commercial airplane gets you all psyched because of the inconvenience it may bring, you can forget all the hassles when you board in a private plane. All you have to do is go to the airport or wherever your aircraft is located, board on it and get set for a luxurious flight ahead.
Private air charters are best for business trips. You can readily arrange ground transportation and even catering services inside the plane. If you value time more than anything else, then a private jet rental is the best thing for you. You can actually manage and dictate your flight itinerary. Private jets can also land to a number of destinations that usual commercial airlines are not permitted to go. This means that you can get to your destination faster and easier.
And of course, there is one thing that you can have in a private jet charter that you will never have in a commercial flight - privacy. To a lot of people this is very important, especially if you are on a discrete personal or business trip. Unlike in commercial flights where you get to ride with a bunch of strangers, hiring a private jet allows you to travel with your friends or family. Plus, you actually have the entire jet to yourself. You would get the privacy you want and the comfortable flight you definitely need. You can opt to do some business matters on the plane or do your personal thing.
You might think that flying with a private jet charter would be quite pricey. But you actually save a lot more than you can imagine if you are traveling in a group. It's a cost-effective alternative than buying individual tickets from a commercial airline. Most private air charter can accommodate eighteen passengers at a maximum. If you come to think of it, if you divide the total cost for eighteen people, it would be more ore less the same amount of money that you pay for a usual commercial flight. What's even better is that if you happen to have a number of stopovers during your flight you can save a lot on parking and hotel costs.
More and more business people are using private jet charters for their travels. Top management people like CEO and executive managers usually aboard private flights. Celebrities and high-profile people are also common customers of private flight services. More elite organizations also prefer to ride in Private Jet Flights and travel as a group.
If you wanted to travel in style and in complete luxury, traveling on a private jet charter is your best option. You may have to pay a little extra, but the comfort and the privacy you're going to get in return is well worth it.
ExecuJet Opens Jet Interiors Showroom in Zurich
The Air Stream Jets Aviation Group opened its new aircraft interiors showroom on December 10, at its headquarters in
First to visit is a new customer from the
“This facility is a true A to Z of interiors with 60 of the biggest luxury material houses in
Aircraft Furnishings
On show is a large range of wood veneers, a wide selection of leather qualities such as calf, lamb and buffalo as well as countless fabrics including silk, cotton and velour. The showroom boasts an extensive selection of plating in various shades of gold and platinum and all grades of carpet including hand tufted cashmere, silk and some 500 samples of coloured wool balls. The showroom also features an extensive range of aircraft furnishings and accessories including cashmere blankets, towels and china ware that are all part of the VIP amenities packages.
“We have invested in this facility for our clients to give them a one stop shop when planning their aircraft interiors. Everything can be planned on site from wood for the tables and sideboards to the colour and feel of luxury inflight blankets,” commented Gerrit Basson, Managing Director Air stream Jets Aviation Group.
“Previously our representatives have been travelling to clients all over the world carrying large cases of samples, but this showroom offers a far wider variety enabling the interiors to be planned on site in comfort using our computers and state of the art design software.
Charter Flight Interiors
Air stream Jets’s jet interiors showroom has been designed inhouse by the company’s interiors specialist Pavina PapĂ©. She has used neutral stone and slate colours to create a stylish, minimalist look that does not detract from the products and materials showcased. This is a project that has taken almost a year to come to fruition. Back lighting is complemented by glass and furniture has been sourced from designer Ron Arad.
Air stream Jets’s Completions Division works hand in hand with the OEMs as soon an aircraft deal, new or pre-owned, is concluded with a customer. Complementing its interiors expertise, Air stream Jets has a wealth of accreditations in MRO and technical services operating over 150 Private Jets on management contracts on eight Aircraft Operators Certificates (AOCs) around the world.
Air stream Jets works primarily with Bombardier, reflecting the close relationship that the two companies enjoy, but with this new showroom it is confident of drawing more work from other manufacturers. Air stream Jets has also already worked on Falcon, Gulfstream and Citation families.
“We don’t go for the cookie cutter approach. This investment in our new showroom underlines this,” concludes Pascal Jallier.

How to Choose a Private Jet Charter Company
# Identify the Right Charter Operator. Yes, one could check the local yellow pages or a favorite search engine to locate charter companies. However, there won’t be any information about the quality of individual companies there, other than what is written in advertisements created by the companies themselves. Use the web to look for online directories of FAA authorized charter operators, their locations, and the various aircraft they offer. There are a number of charter brokers who appear to have many aircraft but in reality are serving in a capacity similar to a travel agent. Charter brokers are not FAA authorized and do not have any aircraft under their control. If you like the idea of using a travel agent keep in mind a quality FAA authorized operator can access a jet anywhere in the world just like a broker. Now that you have a list of operators, their aircraft, and phone numbers you need to ask a few basic questions.
# Validate the Charter Company. The next step is verifying the charter company’s advertising claims through official documentation. In order to simplify this complicated task, one can break down the process into three categories: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) documentation, insurance and third-party audits.
FAA Documentation – Each charter company must have a valid Part 135 air taxi certificate which authorizes it to fly for hire. Obtaining a Part 135 certificate requires the charter company to adhere to FAA guidelines and is strictly enforced by the FAA. Ask for a copy of their "Air Carrier Certificate" which is the official document granted by the FAA. If a charter company does not have an air carrier certificate, they are not authorizied by the FAA to conduct charter operations.
Insurance – Often overlooked, insurance can provide a great deal of information about a charter company. Typical limits for a charter company are $50M-$100m for a small jet (such as a Cessna Citation, Lear 40 or Hawker 400XP), $100M for a mid-sized jet (such as a Hawker 800XP, Lear 60 or Citation XL) and $100M-$500M for a large jet (such as a Challenger, Gulfstream or Falcon). Often, these higher insurance limits require an audit by the insurance company to assure that the pilots and mechanics have the appropriate experience to operate a safe flight. Also, another free service most operators will offer is for the passenger to be “named additional insured” on the policy. This option is really a personal decision. It should be considered if the passenger flies private charter on an ongoing, regular basis.
Third Party Audits – There are several companies that specialize in auditing charter companies. The industry’s most used services are Aviation Research Group (ARG/US) or Wyvern. ARG/US & Wyvern compile several databases, including FAA, Department of Transportation (DOT) and one on aircraft transactions, to determine the safety records of the operator, its pilots and its aircraft. In addition, these companies will perform on-site audits on safety procedures, aircraft log books and additional documentation. The only way to verify that an operator has been audited by one of these organizations is to contact ARG/US or Wyvern directly.
Visit the Company: This may not always be possible, but you will learn a tremendous amount of information about a company by meeting their people, seeing their facitly, and touring a few aircraft. Viewing people and facilities will tell you a lot about the quality of aircraft and level of service you can expect from the charter company.
Look for Good Customer Service: Ideally, there should be a single person responsible for your trip. Also, live help should be available around the clock for if you must change your plans, make a special request, or ask a question. You will get a great sense of their level of service by how you are treated on the phone. Does the agent take time with you, ask questions to ensure they understand what is important to you, are they polite, and most importantly, are they responsive.
Select an Aircraft: Often, a charter company will provide pictures of an aircraft under consideration for a trip. Be warned, however, that pictures are deceiving and may not be current. The only way absolutely ensure the status of an aircraft is to view it personally. Also, because insurance levels can change at any time and vary by aircraft within the same fleet, it is important to ask for a copy of the insurance policy before each and every flight.
Check up on your Pilot: Find out what the provider's standards are for minimum pilot hours. Different jet types require different pilot hours. Once you have chosen an aircraft, verify that the assigned pilot has the required number of pilot hours on that type of craft. Generally, each captain should have at least 5000 total flight hours and 300 hours in the specific aircraft type. Ask how often the pilots attend recurrent training in a full-motion simulator. Once every six months is considered ideal. Anything less, the pilot may not be as fresh as possible on the latest procedures.
Find Out How Much it Will Cost: As the details of your needs become more specific, you should be able to get a clear quote, not a vague estimate that leaves room for surprises on the final invoice. Any always ask for a hard quote. Yes, ceratain things such as catering, ground transportation, and flight phone usuage are not known before the flight, but everything else should be a firm quote so you are not suprised by the final billing.
The Economic Sense of Private Jet Charters
Air Charter Service have many advantages over regular commercial travel. While there are still security factors, there aren't a bunch of obnoxious drunks in line ahead of you, or a crying baby. The other nice part is, you won't be flying with them either! You get through and are on your way far quicker than normal flights, even on a good day. One of the other advantages is that you are more likely to get what you want, when you want it with a charter service, as long as there is availability. Their schedules are your schedules for the most part. If you are on a tight timeline and need a jet charter, if the one you want isn't available, they will try to set you up with one that closely fits your needs.
Another advantage that a jet charter service is they are much faster than a normal commercial airline company. Not only are there long lines and delays with commercial air travel, but if you are planning multiple destinations, you usually have layovers, hotel expenditures and an accumulation of other costs. Your time wasted is like wasting money. With jet charter services, and their flexible schedules, you could fit multiple meetings into one day, and maybe still get home in time for a late dinner.
Depending on the size of the jet, many private jets can come and go from much smaller airports with ease where a commercial airliner may not even fit on the runway. They vary in size and accommodations, but there is a jet charter service that will fit your every need. Being able to get into smaller regional airports may mean the difference between to a client that lives in a rural area in a short time, or having to still rent a car from a major airport and make a long drive to your destination, not to mention a hotel stay because of the schedules of the airlines.
Now you have to remember that a jet charter service is not as cheap as a commercial flight, as some charter companies either charge extra to get a particular jet if its availability is limited, and if there is one jet that is more popular over another, then you may have to pay extra. However, the time you save, your ability to combine a trip that may have taken three or four days into one, and the money saved in hotels, meals, etc. could well pay for the cost of the jet charter. And that doesn't include the boost in overall company productivity.
Whichever jet charter service you may consider, read all the fine print. Make sure what jets are available, as well schedules, and if there are any extra costs. You may find that companies offer competitive prices, but you also want to make sure you get the most for your money.
